So we finally made it to French Louie. Not a lot on the board about it so I will give an initial review. Its in the old Jolie space. Much nicer looking with a very contemporary design. Nice garden area too.
Service started out fine. Ordered a bottle of wine. List is fairly comprehensive and I thought the prices looked reasonable.
We ordered several starters. Anchovy frites were whole anchovies that had been breaded and fried like smelt. Unlike a mess of smelt, there were only 5. Very tasty but could have used more. Also had a raw mackerel dish that was fabulous. The rillette was huge. Giant piece of toasted bread with the rillette spread on top. Needed a steak knife to cut it into portions. Probably least interesting of starters though.
Then we sat and waited, drank some wine and waited and waited some more. It was busy and the kitchen has not worked out its timing very well. Must have been a 1/2 hour between finishing the apps and getting our mains.
They have 3 versions of steak and frites. We had two of them. The first was supposed to be bavette. It was properly cooked and quite tasty, but it wasn't bavette. London broil. A bit of false advertising. If you're going to go out of the way and put bavette on the menu, don't serve london broil. Also had the lamb shoulder chop. Again nicely seasoned and properly cooked. However, the dish had two skinny 1/2" thick chops. It would have been better with a single 1" chop which would have had a better chance to develop a nice char without getting over cooked.
Overall, tasty meal and the servers were great. Kitchen needs to function better. I hope they actually serve bavette at some point. Probably give it some more time to work out the kinks and we will try it again.
