In a recent thread on my native Chicago Chowhound board, on the topic of good burgers, Barney's got mentioned as a yardstick of excellence. I chimed in with my observation, based on my one fortuitous walk-in visit a few months ago, that the burger was good but the fries at Barney's were about the best I'd ever had. In fact, the second best I'd ever had were a day earlier at another SF restaurant (Golden Spike). So, two questions: What does San Francisco know about frying potatoes that everybody else seems not to, and (2) what are the fave frites you would recommend I seek out next time around?
