French 75 - OK Food, Warm Service, It Could Be Worse..

Suebee | Jan 21, 2007 04:05 PM

We recently received a $100 gift card for French 75 and made reservations for last night at the Burbank branch. I was a little frightened after reading the boards yesterday with the most recent "Run Away, Run Away" thread but what could we do?

We got there at 7:50 and were offered 2 glasses of champagne if we would sit on the patio. As this was our first visit, we declined and the hostess promptly sat us inside the dining room.

Our poor server seemed a little overextended, but made sure to connect with us and let us know he'd be right with us. Mr. Suebee and I were in no rush, though cocktails were desired. Our server quickly came back, took our cocktail orders, and promptly returned with our martinis, which were just fine but not mind-blowing.

Mr. Suebee and I normally try to limit our portion-size, sharing almost every course of every meal, so it was a little difficult ordering more than we usually do. We ended up deciding on:

* Endive, pear, walnut, and roquefort salad
* Prosciutto-wrapped Scallops with Butternut Squash
* New York Steak with Bernaise (split and still huge portions)
* Side of Pommes Frites
* 2 glasses of Penfold's Shiraz
* Complimentary Brioche Bread Pudding (so sweet of our server!)

Long story short, the food was not incredible. Lucques, French 75 is not. We ended up with a $120 bill, ending up paying $45 ($20+$25 tip). We both agreed that for $45, it was great but we'd feel let down if we had to actually cough up $145 for the same dinner.

But there's more and this really knocked our socks off. As previously stated, we rarely order so much food and therefore took home a large portion of our steak and the bread pudding.

Mr. Suebee (I'm writing the post, so I can blame him :)) forgot the bag of leftovers and only realized when we were already on the freeway. Because it was practically a whole steak and bread pudding, we went back for it calling on our way back to let the hostess know of our approach.

Unfortunately, when Mr. Suebee walked in the hostess was not at her station and so he headed back to where we sat. The bag could not be found so our server immediately had the kitchen prepare a new NY steak and bread pudding...making up for OUR mistake. Mr. Suebee and I were touched and impressed.

I don't know if we'll rush back, but to be fair, we have had worse food and service at the same price point. French 75 was packing them in so I suppose they're doing something right for some non-hound population.
