We had 2 dinners while in Franschhoek - The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Francais and Reubens.
Our first visit was to The Tasting Room . An excellent experience! Food was amazing - very interesting combinations, with local elements. The ambience was excellent - we had a table facing the garden. The staff was exceptional - personable, professional and extremely attentive. Clearly the highlight of our three week South African vacation. It was very expensive by South African standards (not by Western European/US/Canadian standards), but we definitely were not complaining about the price. Excellent value for the overall experience.
We went to Reuben's the next time, after hearing great things about it. As we were very much looking forward to our visit, we went in the afternoon and picked out a table. The staff told us they would reserve it for us. When we arrived for dinner, there were only two tables in use, including the table we had selected. Undeterred by this minor incident, we chose another table. We enjoyed the food, although it was not special. Similar quality to other similar and lower priced restaurants we dined at during our three week trip to South Africa. However, the service was on the low end of our experiences. Although the servers were friendly, they were rarely at our table. We waited long for everything - first order, plates to be cleaned, the bill, etc.
Overall, not a bad experience at Reuben's, just a disappointing one. We had a far better evening at The Tasting Room. Perfection in all aspects! Way more expensive than Reuben's, but for quality/ambience/service, a much better value.
