We went for dinner here last night after having heard mixed reviews.
Food went from poor to acceptable. The crab cakes, though very meaty, were not sweet enough. The turbot tasted as if it had been frozen. The filet mignon had an 'agricultural' taste about it. I question the quality of this particular cut. The sweet potato chips had far too much salt. On the other hand, the mushroom bisque was great, as was the shellfish sampler. I also liked the lobster mashed potato.
The service was confused. We had no less than four different waiters serve us. Two of those had problems opening a bottle of wine. They also tried to charge us a mandatory 20% gratuity even when our party was less than the six or greater listed on the menu to which this applies. When will restaurants work out that if you do this you annoy people and the actual tip will be lower than what they would have got?
The evening ended on a sour note when we went outside to see the valet sitting in our car keeping himself warm. He then lied and said that they had just moved it. The car was fully warmed up and had a nasty smell in it. Unacceptable.
I won't be patronizing Franks's again.
