My fiancee and I are going to Paris and a couple as-yet-undetermined destinations in France for our honeymoon this January, probably January 9 to 23 or so. There are plenty of posts on Paris, which I've begun to review, so I won't ask about that (unless anybody has some special Paris-in-January tips). What we could use help on is what else to do, chow-wise.
Please bear in mind that we're going in January. People hear we're going to France, and then recommend places, but when we ask how that desination would be in January, they tend to be at a loss. The January thing seems to put us into a bit of a gap for the guidebooks too. We're actually really glad to be going in an off-season, tourist-wise, but of course we don't want to end up in Town X only to find that all the restaurants are closed.
What I think we could really use is some recommendation of some smaller locale, like a smaller town with some distinctive and excellent chow options, or an inn we could stay at where there's a superb restaurant. I'd also like to find some places where there's stuff different from what I've experienced here as French food.
The cities we're presently thinking of checking out are places like Strasbourg, Chanomix, or Lyon. (The very recent Alsace & C post was very interesting to me.) We're also contemplating zipping down to Nice and that area, though I don't imagine the cuisine there will be so unfamiliar. Brittany also appealed to me, but would it make sense to go in January?
Any thoughts on this will be very welcome, and I'm planning to keep a journal and report back.
