"Non foodie," Californian parents visiting

I'd like to take them to a nice dinner, but not somewhere where the price shocks them. (I'll be paying but I don't want them to freak out anyhow...) Big names and "it" places aren't going to matter because they probably won't recognize them, but I want them to feel like they are having a really special night out. They are both adventurous eaters, but also used to down home cuisine, if the menu says "steak" it better somewhat resemble steak.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(I'd like to stay below 30th, but if there's anything that fits the bill above that I'd be open...)
