Foil touching food

I notice a lot of recipes call for wrapping food in foil, including those on TV chef shows. Is anyone else nervous about cooking food, particularly those with an acidic element, that is wrapped in or otherwise TOUCHING the foil?

When I cover a dish with foil, I will usually put a piece of parchment between the food and the foil. Am I adding an unneccessary step?

Is there any hard data on this subject?
