Flying Saucer Pies

So I'm lazing around Saturday morning, in no real hurry to get moving. Planning to do some house chores but eager to find a reason, (ANY REASON!), not to, and my little brother calls. He's dropping his car off at our favorite mechanic's and needs a ride.


So, off I went. "As long as we're out", I say, "how about we run down to Pete's Fine Meats and see what's what?"

"Instead", he suggests, "How about we run over to Ace Restaurant Supply?", a place I've been mentioning wanting to visit for quite literally years.

Off we go. Ace was cool, but neither of us bought anything. However, we agreed that the next time we need to buy plates...

"So, how about quick run to Canino's as long as we're out?"

"Wait, better idea. How about lunch at Barbecue Inn?"

"Great idea, but it's still a little early. How about we run over to Alamo for some fresh tamales?"

"Great idea. By then, it will be 11:45 or so, and we'll come back to BBQ Inn."

"Great idea."

Buy tamales. Eat chicken fried steak, with a side of fried shrimp and oysters, (Thanks again JamesC), and then...

...and then...

Our server, Mother Teresa, (a lovely lady who is the mom of the hostess), asks us if we saved room for dessert, and like a thunderbolt, I have an epiphany. Today is the day we visit Flying Saucer.

Didn't know where it was, but between bro's iPhone and Mother Teresa's assurance it was just a block or so away, off we scooted....

...and found it right where it is supposed to be, (and has apparently been for literally decades). We enter as industrial looking of a bakery as I've ever seen. The chalkboard overhead describes the seasonal offerings of pumpkin pie and blueberry cheesecake, as well as the fifteen or so regular offerings.

Running about $11 to $13 each, there were some tough decisions to be made...

...until I am informed by the young lady behind the counter that I can buy slices. That's right, it's not all or nothing; it's offered up Doobie Style. A little of this, a little of that...

...and I make off with five slices. An apple, and a cherry as well as three slices of cheesecake, cherry, strawberry and blueberry.

As I have confessed before, I am not really a sweet eater. I never make dessert. And I mean never.

But man oh man, this stuff is not good. It is GREAT.

BBQ Inn and Flying Saucer are a block apart.

No way that can be a coincidence. It is a karmic convergence that is proof of God's love for all his children.

Do this. Go there. Eat pie.

It will make a believer out of you.
