Flushing food court update, Xi'an counter

First, the bad news. The Shanghai Snack counter is no longer. It's being replaced by a Malaysian fast food counter called Asia Malaysia Cuisine. It didn't look quite open yet, but they were spreading menus around.

On to the good news. I went by the Xi'an counter to further explore their limited menu. I got the cold noodle dish I described in the linked post. This could be the king of all cold noodle dishes. The noodles were similar to chow fun rice noodles, but much firmer in texture. I can't say enough about that chili sauce. It's flavorful without being overpoweringly hot, and it is the perfect overtone for the vinegary sauce that soaks the noodles. Lots of firm (pressed) tofu, bean sprouts, and a garnish of cilantro round out the dish. The best part could be that it only costs $2.50.

While I was talking to the counter man, he was preparing a sandwich for another customer. He pulled out some slow-cooked pork, chopped it up with some cilantro and stuffed it into one of those flat round breads. This is the cross between a pulled pork sandwich and a pita sandwich. I ordered one of those as well. As it turned out, it was more like a cross between a pulled pork sandwich and a sloppy joe. The meat was nicely sweet, and that fresh bread was kind of crackly, yet slightly dense and chewy (I'm sure it would be a hockey puck by the next day), like a Montreal bagel. They also make these sandwiches with beef and lamb. I'll have to try those another time.
