Thanks to all who've recommended the Nicaraguan rum Flor de Cana on this site. I just got two bottles from my local Jon's (at Vermont/Hollywood)-- one for me and one for a friend-- and did a side-by-side tasting with my usual Bacardi's. The Flor was smooth, with a delicious fruity aroma. Bacardi didn't smell bad, but was harsh in comparison. And twice the price! Incidentally, there were two grades of Flor: regular (aged 4 years) and Black Label (aged 5). The Black Label was twice as much as the regular, and I didn't think an extra year would make THAT much difference. Oh, I think the bottle was a liter and cost less than $8.
