Flight of Ports

Just Larry | Jul 5, 200511:24 PM

We had lunch Saturday at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. The room is beautiful and staff very skilled. They brought me a menu and also a wine list. At lunch I usually order wine by the glass so I was looking at that part of the list. I noticed they also offer 4 flights. The flight of 4 Ports intrigued me. It is $38.00 and included 2 very nice younger ports, a 1983 and also a 1977. The first 2 were very enjoyable and a good versions of expensive but affordable ports. The 1983 was a bit more complex. The 1977 had every taste but at attention and was a masterwork in complexity and nuance. The food was expensive but pretty good. Only real glitch was that my medium rare Kobe Burger with Truffle was brought well done, I finished every bite but it would have been beeter as ordered (I never send food back unless it is not what I ordered or inedible). Wife's Pear Salad was very nice and Molten Chocolate dessert was also very good.
On the dessert menu they list the Ports priced my the glass. If you ordered a glass of each port in the flight it is well over $100.00 and the pour is almost the same amount. I think it is only a matter of time until they realize that they are giving away the store on this flight. The other flights are $28.00 and offer 2 oz. pours of decent wines. Not a value at all.
Lunch was a bit over $120.00 including tip. That is alot of money but I felt that it was truly worth it to have experienced that many good quality Ports at one time.
