Fleur de Lys update

razordog | Aug 26, 200203:15 PM

hello all, i just wanted to share my experience at fleur de lys with the board as the board has been so helpful.

wife and i went there last friday with another couple and we were all impressed with the decor, very nice and romantic, according to my wife and the other lady, the total meal took over about 3 hours, and they offer prie fix menus, similar to the way gary danko does it

i'm not a great writer so please bear with me here:

the food:
I started with the duo of hudson valley foie gras, which was a duck & foie gras burger and this little casserole....i got to say the duck & foie gras burger was good but not extraordinary and the casserole smelled and tasted like one of those chicken pot pie dinners, i'm serious, so i wasn't impressed here

wife got the quail appetizer, she really like it but i've never not seen here like any dish with quail

for fish:
i got the skate wing with rockshrimp meatball and black spaghetti (squid ink) - this dish was truly excellent

my wife got the serrano ham wrapped monkfish - it was really good but not extraordinary like the skate wing

i ordered the roasted squab breast filled w/foi gras, this was excellent, my favorite squab dish anywhere i'd have to say, so juicy and tender and melt in your mouth good

wife got the veal - it came out overcooked and very tough, a big disappointment

wife got the chocolate souffle, it was very eggy and right after the waiter put down the souffle, it started to deflate, as a side note, our friend got the grand maurinere (sp?) souffle which she prounced the best souffle she's ever had

i got the cheese plate - it was good, but i wish i had gotten a regular dessert instead

now the imporant part, i would have been ok with the whole experience if the service had met my expectations, but the service was just ok to good, it wasn't what i expected at all, first of all, there were like 5 different waiters bringing us food, and when they were pouring the sparkling water, they would spill little drips here and there, secondly, they didn't explain the cheese plate i got, forgot to bring lemons that my wife had asked for her water, and most annoyingly, two of the wait staff had very arrogant attitudes

let me sum up by saying the food is good here, as the other couple we went with enjoyed all their courses very much, i would just stay away form the veal and the duo of foie gras, but the service needs some work, as it is nowhere near the level of service of a competitor as Gary Danko

so, my conclusion is if the service was better, i'd go back, but as it stands, i'd rather go to gary danko or masa's as the food is as good if not better at those places, but the service at those restauants is better there whereas its just ok at fleur de lys

our friend summed it up by saying the ideal restaurant would be: service of gary danko, food of masa's and decor of fleur de lys

they have a website with an online menu to get a better detail of the entrees that my wife and i ordered
