Different Flavours of Cinnamon?

I recently bought some cinnamon at my local supermarket. It's sold in bulk there, so I usually buy maybe half a pound a couple of times per year. I've been buying my cinnamon there for the past several years....same store, same bulk bin.

This time when I got home and scooped the cinnamon into the glass jar I store it in, I noticed a weird smell. I didn't think too much of it, until a few days later when I made cinnamon toast using this recent batch of cinnamon. I noticed the smell again, and this time when I tasted it, it tasted like detergent!

I thought it may have gone bad, but I remember the bulk bin at the store was full. Then I thought maybe there are different kinds of cinnamon with different flavors? Madagascar cinnamon? Peruvian cinnamon?

The thing is, it does not taste bitter, or rancid, or sour, or any of the usual tell tale signs of food that has gone 'off'. It still tastes mostly cinnamon-y, yet there is this weird pungent chemical detergent almost clove-like smell and taste to it.... very different from every other time I've bought cinnamon. It's hard to accurately describe.

Anyone have any ideas?
