What Flavors Make A Classic Seafood Stew

On the L.A. board today a poster is looking for cioppino and has some vague memory of a fish stew/soup with anise.

I have enjoyed cioppino, boulliabaise, and Portugues fisherman's stew and Mexican fisherman's stew, but do not recall any anise flavor in any of them.

What is your favorite rendition of a seafood stew?
