Fish and Soup

Although I am a grown-up I know very little about fish, mainly because it is expensive and I am cheap. However, I have a nice, simple recipe for soup that calls for a pound of fish and some shrimp that simmers for 10 minutes in a shellfish broth to which some garlic and tomatoes have been added. Could someone tell me what kind of fish I should get for this recipe? (If you say "a flaky white fish" or something like that, I won't know what you're talking about.)
