Fish & Chips at ABC Canteen, Fairfax

Washington DC Fish and Chips Restaurant Intel Fairfax

Just a quick shout out to the excellent fish and chips at ABC Canteen in Fairfax. Gorgeous job on the frying, not too oily. Just what I am looking for in fish and chips. They also have some real deal tacos.

Let me know if you've been there.

Just went for the first time last weekend (finally.) Tom liked his fish, and said the fries were pretty good. I had the Canteen salad with barbacoa. I wish I wasn't told the barbacoa was a bit spicy, since it rendered me a bit disappointed (not spicy at all, but I used some hot sauces.) Would go back to try more for sure, though. Sweet service, and the prices are hard to beat.

I think we had a thread about this place a while back. I ate lunch there twice, shortly after they opened, based on the discussion here. The fish and chips that I saw coming out of the kitchen was too large of a portion for me to eat for lunch, so I went for the tacos and tamales, both of which were excellent.

After reading raves about the hush puppies, I asked (this was late lunch time) if I could get a half order, and they wouldn't do it. Seemed like an easy thing to do. What I'd like to have is an order of the fish with a half order of hush puppies rather than the fries, but they don't seem inclined to tinker with the menu or servings. Shouldn't be difficult to cook and serve, but probalby too much trouble to figure out on the spot how much to charge.

Now that my $5 lunch budget has been consistently busted, I might go for the fish one day and stuff myself.

I did carry out and didn't ask. I have malt vinegar at home, though lately I've been using white vinegar for battered and fried stuff. Straight, no chaser.

They have a lot of stuff out on the counter. I'm sure they have malt vinegar. The place used to be an Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips, and I think they wanted to keep those customers.
