Finally made it to Fireman's and had an absolutely delightful late lunch.
As other Chowhounds have pointed out, the steamers are fabulous, certainly the best I've ever had in NYC. The New England clam chowder is complex -- purists might not like it, but I thought it was fabulous.
The only off-note was a goopy Casear salad.
Desserts were definitely from the same source as Redeye Grill, including the famed banana cream pie. One friend and I split an order of onion rings for dessert (the waitress offered us either ketchup or chocolate source as an accompaniment).
Didn't sample enough (or, come to think of it, any traditional entrees) to pronounce any judgment, but I was very impressed. Just as Trattoria Dell'Arte doesn't pretend to be Grandma's Trattoria, so does Fireman's not worry about being Ye Olde Fish House, to which I say, "Amen."
