Took my boyfriend to Firefly for his birthday last weekend. It was our second trip and our first one, although many months ago, was spectacular so we were hoping for a repeat. We were seated promptly even though we were about 15 minutes early for our reservation. Our waitress seemed new and either shy or uninterested. She was friendly enough but this is the type of restaurant where I'd expect really friendly/talky service for some reason and I was a little bummed that we didn't get it. When I had made the reservation I mentioned it was for my boyfriends birthday celebration and the women said she'd make a note of that. I didn't expect them to bring in a clown to sing "happy birthday" or anything but the waitress acknowledging it would have been nice. Oh well.
Nothing *really* caught my eye on the appetizers menu but it's probably because I had been studying the menu for the past week or so, haha. So I started with the Firefly Roll which is basically a tuna tempura roll. The presentation and the taste were outstanding. It was as good as anything I've had at a sushi restaurant, I would definitely order it again. The BF had Blue Cheese Soufflé w/salad which he seemed to really enjoy but I didn't get much of a taste.
Last time we ate at Firefly I ordered a fish entree which was out-of-this-world good. This time I wanted to order the Salmon Filet but I was so curious about the Pumpkin Steak that I ended up being adventurous and ordered that. I wish I hadn't. I love just about anything pumpkin so I was really hoping this would be an amazing dish. I think if it had been something that incorporated pumpkin instead of focusing on it, it would have worked much better. Instead, it was a big slab of under seasoned pumpkin covered in a thin, tempura like batter sitting on some way overpowering black beans and some tasteless vegan cream. I was over-it by the third bite. I wish the pumpkin flavor had been stronger but I actually had to add salt (something I never do) just to add flavor. Oh well. BF had the Grilled Eggplant and Tofu Moussaka which he enjoyed, the salad that accompanied it was yummy as well.
For desert I had the Lemon Goat Cheese Cake which was insanely good. If I had had one more glass of wine I may have licked the plate. BF had the Ginger Flan which I didn't care for and judging by how many bites of my Cheese Cake he kept stealing he wasn't crazy about it either.
We both agree that Firefly is our favorite restaurant in SF so we'll definitely be back. But next time I'm ordering the fish.
