In the past, I have been asked quite a few times where one can find great Hong Kong Cafe style food in Toronto and its suburbs. Today, after re-trying ' Firefly ' inside of First Markham Place, I think its position as amongst some of GTA best is assured.
By Hong Kong Cafe standard, this place is huge! Furnished with outdated decor, however, degree of comfort and atmosphere was passable and quite relaxing. Service, though friendly, was slow and lethargic. Fortunately, all these short falls were rescued by the surprisingly tasty, and value-for-money food. Portions were generous so one needs to gauge accordingly.
A few really stand out offerings include an authentic tasting Hong Kong style Russian Borscht, an excellent, balanced and not too tangy Baked Cheese and Spaghetti with Meat Sauce and an almost perfect Hong Kong style Baked Pork-Chop on rice. The piping hot sweet Brioche that goes with the soup was so delicious. The baked jumbo rock oyster with garlic butter topping at $3.99 for two when total meal order exceeds $35 was a great tasty deal.
Though the overall presentation and taste might not fit some western palate, however, to patrons familiar with British colonial Hong Kong style cafe food, the offerings will for sure bring back fond memories!
For comparison purposes, their closest competitor is Time Square's Richmond Court. IMHO, Firefly's food is a notch better.
