Recently saw a story in our local newspaper that Ryan's restaurants was planning a more upscale appeal in launching their new Fire Mountain restaurants.
Don't get me wrong... as a connoisseur of buffets, I like Ryans but I wonder if the game plan is to simply phase out the Ryans name and replace it with "Fire Mountain". I went for the first time today to a newly opened Fire Mountain and about the only thing that was more upscale was the signage and the addition of a few more plastic plants. The food was identical to the Ryan's buffet du jour, even down to the garlic mashed potatoes.
The seasoned green beans were watery, as was the fried okra. The hamburger steak from the grill was dry and crumbly. Fried chicken was overly greasy. Fried tilapia from the grill was OK but nothing I'd go back for. Corn, limas, pinto beans, and their non-baked version of macaroni and cheese were classic Ryans.
Ryans fresh rolls are good and they have a good dessert bar.
