Finding dishes from chow movies?

Limster | Feb 26, 2003 11:34 PM

The thread about chowish movies stirred up a craving. Are there places that actually serve some of the less common dishes (i.e. exclude dishes like Peking duck from the beginning of Eat Drink Man Women, or ramen from Tampopo...)?

In particular, I've always craved the truffle and foie gras stuffed quail baked in pastry in Babette's feast and (IIRC) the "timbale" (layers of pasta and meat and sauce etc...) in Big Night. Love to hear if anyone has had good versions of them anywhere. (I'm posting here in the General Board because I probably wouldn't mind going a little distance for some of them if there's a good version; they don't have to be within 100 miles of where I live.)

And I'll chip in first -- quail with rose petal sauce from Like Water for Chocolate -- had a pleasant version of this dish at Destino in SF; it was a daily special that they've served it on more than one occasion.
