Where do I find tasty coffee on Manhattan and avoid Starbuck's?

Question

I'm looking for coffee shops or cafes that serve tasty coffee. I'm Swedish and looking for something European, and with that I mean coffeee that actually includes coffein. I don't want the bitter, burned taste from Starbuck's. Can anyone help me?

There are many places that have what you're looking for. Two of my personal favorites in Manhattan are Ceci Cela, on Spring St. and Mulberry, and the Hungarian Pastry Shop, on Amsterdam near 110th. But if you walk around much in just about any neighborhood (excluding midtown, I think) you will see numerous places, some of which will be good -- the best way to find out which ones, is to check it out.

Someone gave me a bag of Ikea coffee for Christmas a few years ago and I really liked it. Is theirs authentically Swedish? If so, I can see why you're missing it.

I love the cafe con leche from the inexpensive latin (sometimes "latin-chinese") restaurants on the Upper West Side. La Rosita, Bdwy/109th street for example, there's another on Broadway at 95 Street (west side of street), and a very popular busy one whose name I don't recall, on Broadway at 75th. It usually costs about $1.25 or $1.50 a cup.

well, some people used to say the st. ambroesus had the real goods. others now say the nueu galerie. however, to my mind, new york desperately lacks properly prepared, correctly roasted, fresh high-quality coffee. i have to agree with fusilli that porto rico, etc. the usual suspects, aren't great. new york's behind in this regard. . .please see my detailed post in "what's my craving" dated today under "fresh roast coffee."the short answer: you'll be making it at home.

There are two Starb*cks located at Astor place - 8th st and 4th ave, or cooper union university. In between the two, next at the subway kiosk (uptown 6 train entrance) there should be an orange truck called "MUD" parked there. For a dollar, they serve their own special blend of coffee, as well as portuguese style (coffee with steamed milk) -- its not one of those coffee carts you commonly see on many street corners in the morning.
 
i think the truck and its coffee was mentioned on the radio some time ago (don't remember the reference)

here's another downtown. there is a starb*cks located on spring street and crosby (that's one block east of broadway). If you go one block west (toward broadway)you get come across Balthazar, a french bistro with a bakery next door. If you go one block east (across lafayette and a bit past the uptown 6 train stop) there is Ceci Cela, a little French patisserie with seating in the back, the pastries are good.

TRY DUNKIN' DONUTS!
There are tons of them around, Find one with heavy traffic(which guarantees you'll get a fresh brew), and a manager who knows what he or she is doing.
