Living temporarily in South Salt Lake, and enjoying some eateries as well as a Crown Burger within walking distance.
I've been eyeing the rotisserie in the window at Chicken Express across the street from my digs, but not being much of a chicken guy, I haven't bothered to try it until yesterday. They also list ribs in their signage, and that caught my attention yesterday, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
Essentially it's a Greek/Persian place - beef and chicken kabobs from a charcoal grill, gyros, you get the idea. But they also offer the ribs and a nice looking selection of French pastries.
I went with a double beef kabob plate with 2 dolmades and a pork rib (they do beef ribs too), with a tab of $11 and some change. When I went back to pick up my order I noticed a patron enjoying a napoleon from the pastry case, so I ordered 1 to stay and 1 to go ( I REALLY like napoleons) adding another $4.29 to the tab.
The kabob plate was way generous, with a nice sized mound of green salad, sporting plenty of a nice, light vinaigrette and a huge mound of fluffy yellow rice adorned with paprika. The dolmades were included on the plate, with the pork rib on a separate plate, doused with sauce.
First bite was half a dolmade, and I was impressed. Absolutely top notch. The kabobs were nicely grilled, with a nice mild beefiness. Salad and rice were both tasty as well. Only the rib disappointed. Texture was fine, but it was a bit flat flavor wise, with a decidedly commercial BBQ sauce poured on top.
The napoleon was excellent, and a killer deal at $2 a pop. All the pastries in the case looked really good, and it could be dangerous to have such an array just a short walk across State St.
I might try a beef rib my next visit, but it's the kabob plates and those dolmades that will keep me coming back on a regular basis.
Chicken Express is at approximately 3440 South State, next to the Rancherito's and down from the Arby's. Fine place for a casual lunch or early dinner.
