east coaster here who has finally given up on deli all together in los angeles. but after hearing all the write ups on langer's pastrami being the best in the west(some even saying better than new york), i tried it. i was excited yet still skeptical after reading that their most popular sandwich was the pastrami w/swiss cheese. pastrami & swiss cheese? huh? it's just wrong.
i opted for the #1, pastrami/slaw/russian. the waiter told me the sandwich was huge so i didn't order any sides. obviously this waiter has never experienced a true sandwich either. i admit, the meat itself was really tasty. but i was ready for something that was going to ease my pangs for katz's. this unfortunately was not it. after realizing the underwhelming size we ordered the potato pancakes, which were awesome. they actually grated the potatos, tasted like my mom's. i know langer's has been there since 1947 and that it's an institution out here, but unless i'm going to another usc football game, i don't think i'll be going out of my way again.
