Help! filo dough question

I'm making a carmelized onion and blue cheese appetizer and instead of the pastry crust called for in the recipe, I thought I would use frozen filo sheets instead. How many sheets should I stack together? Is it necessary to brush melted butter between each layer? Thanks!
