Fil-Am Oriental Market in Cathedral City

Melanie Wong | Mar 30, 201709:58 AM

Hunting for Asian ingredients on Tuesday so that I could cook something for my relatives, I was delighted to spot a beautiful Filipina lady shopping at Whole Foods in Palm Desert with her young son and asked her about Asian grocery stores. She directed me to Fil-Am in the next town.

Fil-Am Oriental Market is a small store but it has the bases covered. I was able to buy glutinous rice, lop cheong Chinese sausage, canned water chestnuts, dried shitake mushrooms and fresh Shanghai cabbages. The shop also has a steam table of Filipino foods and offers up boba tea drinks and ice cream. I indulged in a halo-halo topped with ube ice cream to cool off.

I explained to the cashier how I had found them. She said that the Filipino community in the valley is small but tightly knit. Super nice staff here.
