Help... I can't figure out how to use my new rice cooker

Hello everyone:

I've been trying to cook perfect rice for years. I've never even come close to creating even passable rice. My solution...a rice cooker. My girlfriend bought me one for Christmas. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out how to use it. Often I over cook the rice. Rice that should take, at most, 30 minutes to make takes over an hour and come out soggy.

Unfortunately, my Black and Decker 14 cup rice maker did not come with tips or measuring advice. It did come with a cup with 1/3 cup measuring lines.

I'd like to make 4 cups of par-boiled brown rice. What measurements should I use? What have I been doing wrong with the rice maker?
