A couple of Hound recommendations brought a group of us to Fianona (Hillside Ave., (516)-437-6655) last night. Much of the food was very good -- I especially liked the perfectly-cooked rigatoni with cabbage -- but we all thought it was a bit spendy for what it was. For two courses each (main plus either app. or dessert) plus 5 drinks among 7 people came to about $40 each, and 5 of us had pastas as our main dishes. The menu is fairly typical northern Italian with a few minor excursions elsewhere in the Mediterranean, including some delicious escargots bourginionne. If there were Istrian specialties ([BROKEN LINK REMOVED]), we either missed them or didn't recognize them. Pleasant if somewhat plain room, tuxedo-clad waitstaff, casually dressed clientele. The house Chianti was pretty bad, with the (dubious) advantage of being served in a large glass filled nearly to the brim.
