Over the weekend, I wanted to take my kids out for ice cream as a celebration (my daughter got her first hit in softball). I had heard of a place right off of I-80 at Rte 30, so I thought we would try something new.
Fiala's Homemade Ice Cream is a small storefront shop in a stripmall. They had about 12 flavors of ice cream (we were told all of the ice cream was made in the store).
What really suprised me was the very large selection of gelato the store carried (about 8 flavors) along with some sorbets and frozen custard.
The young man working the counter was increadibly helpfull (I will admit we were there at an odd time and the place wasn't very busy) and let us all taste anything we wanted. My kids tried four or five flavors before deciding and we never felt rushed or pressured.
The gelato was excellent (our family favorite was Rocky Road, but we were told Birthday Cake was their top seller). The ice cream was also very good and had very distinct flavors (my son, 3, could not understand why the rainbow sherbert tasted different than baskin robbins).
The store had a nice selection of waffle cones/bowls which my wife really enjoyed.
They also have something on the menu called "Fudge Puppies" which they describe as a waffle dipped in fudge with sundae toppings. We didn't try it this trip but it sounded interesting.
They also said they served lunch, but it was just hotdogs or Hot Pockets (no, I'm not kidding).
One caution: If you order a Freezer (blizzard), sundae, shake or malt they use the frozen custard unless you tell them otherwise (they did NOT ask). When I inquired they said they will use any of their frozen products for those items, but they charge extra.
This is, so far, the only "premium" ice cream place I have found in Will County. If you are in the southland, I definately suggest you check this place out.
