With all the talk recently about the Ferry Plaza Market on this board, and about the integrity of Farmers' Markets in general on the "Not About Food" board, I thought it a good time to bring forth a link to an excellent website about the Ferry Plaza Market by one Ditty Deamer. It hasn't been updated in three years, and thus almost falls into the category of Instant Nostalgia, but is still an excellent read, especially her profiles of many of the vendors. It's of note that she focuses on the strengths of the Market, namely the vendors of actual produce of their own nurture, and ignores (with one or two exceptions) the "made" goods I just railed about on the other board. It would be interesting if some of the real Saturday Market mavens out there could comment on how many of the vendors she recommends are still out there doing the work of the (Chow) Lord.
I'm also curious if anybody knows Ditty Deamer and what she's up to now. She also has excellent web pages on Free Markets (essentially farmers markets) in Shanghai and Beijing, as well as on breakfast fare produced by street hawkers in these two cities. I've included links to these two features in one of my web sites, and I once emailed Ms. Deamer to thank her and ask her what she was currently up to, but never got a reply.
