Fenwick Bakery/Mastellone's Deli Report

Was fortunate to be able to stop into Fenwick Bakery and Mastellone's on Harford Road in Baltimore on Saturday.

The place was hopping, as usual (they are closed on Sunday). Picked up six marshmallow donuts for Mrs. W. and Mrs. W.'s mom. As good as ever, but only on day one. Very short shelf life.

I tried for the first time Fenwick's famous peach cake. This is a great "adult" dessert (quite a counterpoint to the marshmallow donuts). The cake part of the cake is not sweet and there's not much of it -- it's kind of hard to describe, but basically all you taste are the big chunks of local peaches.

Other patrons were raving about the pineapple upside down cake and the danish. This is a real old-time bakery with real old-time Baltimore character -- and characters.

At Mastellone's I picked up a pound of fresh mozz, a ciabatta bread, and a container of olive spread (haven't tried that yet). The bread and mozz were very good but I have to say that I think I've been spoiled by the mozz from Blue Ridge Dairy in Leesburg, which is now the gold standard in these parts.
