When I worked downtown, Feng was my sushi of choice. Till last night, tho', I never made it for dinner. At first, I had serious sticker shock over the dinner prices, as compared to say, sashimi dinner in any of my regular haunts--not to mention you've gotta pay for parking, too. In fact, we almost ate at Koji instead, but it had more of a bar vibe and fewer dinner choices, so Feng it was. Yes, the specialty rolls were pricier than other local offerings (many are $18), but worth every bite, so glad we stuck with our original choice.
Don't laugh--we had the best crab rangoons we had ever eaten ANYWHERE...definitely a serious level up from standard takeout variety...very light, crispy exterior, bursting with creamy crab inside. Mmmmm!
The special roll of the night, made of peppered tuna with mango in a soybean wrapper, had some other tricked-out, unexpected ingredients (eggplant, dried apple?)...not traditional, for sure, but every bit of fresh, excellent and unique.
The dynamite roll--tempura jumbo soft-shell crab, with spicy salmon, jalapeño and romaine inside, topped with spicy tuna and shredded crispy kani with three different sauces--was quite delicious, too. Though I have come to appreciate straight sashimi more than rolls over time, these were definitely some creative, artfully prepared specialties. If it seems cost prohibitive at dinner, try Feng for lunch or HH. We had a spicy tuna roll, too, that was better than the average spicy tuna for sure.
Oh...and not sure if this is a general trend in bars, or only ones at Asian restaurants, but I am LOVING all the lychee drinks! Had a killer lychee martini at Feng and an equally tasty Asian something (rum, coconut rum, sake, lychee) at Koji...and still love the Drunken Concubine at Forbidden City in Middletown as well. Cheers to lychee cocktails and cheers to Feng!
