Just curious what strategies people use. Do you find different website reviews more useful than others (e.g., trip advisor, yelp). Do you do lots of research and plan out specific places based on Chowhound? Do you give food photo's more weight than anything else? Do you just go somewhere and play it by ear, maybe ask the hotel staff what they recommend? Zagat or other guides?
I do lots of research, weighting Yelp and TripAdvisor equally but discounting Facebook star ratings as they are so inflated as to run into ceiling effects. I'll ask around on Chowhound for ideas. Sometimes, I'll get local knowledge when I'm at my destination which has proven helpful sometimes but not other times. I definitely pay attention to the photos on various websites. I think you can tell a lot about how food will taste based on how it looks. I don't use any guidebooks, partly because with so much info on the web, I don't see the point.
