FeldmanFest: Gourmet Ghetto report

Ruth Lafler | Sep 7, 2004 12:08 AM

We didn't have any takers for the Friday Gourmet Gheto crawl, so instead I turned it into Ruth's special East Bay culinary tour. I'll leave most of the comments for Dave's fresh perspective, but here was the itinerary:

Old Oakland Farmers' Market/Housewives Market
Cheeseboard Pizza
Cheeseboard Cheeses
Original Peet's store
Cafe Fanny
Berkeley Bowl

Of those, Gregoire was new to me. The famous potato puffs are indeed sublime, and the pear bread pudding with caramel sauce was delicious. It's always fun to introduce someone to the Bowl -- we got a weird-looking tuber called an "oca" and I spent the weekend pulling it out of my pocket and making people guess what it was.
