After the Board's recs (thanks "J"), we went to Casa Christine in Federal Hill. Best meal we have had in ages! The chalk board had 16 entrees to choose from, as did the chalk board with appetizers. Not bad for a small place. We had an early 4 pm reservation and the place was quiet, but got crowded quickly. We came armed with our Chianti Classico and were seated, abruptly, by Christine. I don't know what all the fuss is about. This is a lady...up there in years...who runs a family owned business! I'm sure she's stressed! But she has a warm smile and friendly manner if you go the extra mile. We did not find her abrasive in the least.
After trying our fried calamari, which was raved about on the Boards, we decided we wanted veal. Although "diner fare" in most Italian restaurants, veal parmigiana can be a delight if cooked properly, and we had missed having it. So, we took a chance. Well, did it ever pay off! The most succulent, tender veal! Delicate as the calamari was. Not over-cheesed or over-sauced. And a very generous portion! We were served (and talked with) Christine's daughter-in-law, who, when I told her we learned of Casa Christine online, told me her daughter had read some of the things that were said about her Grandma and was quite upset. So, if anyone goes for the great food, lay off Christine! She's someone's grandma!
We passed on dessert to head for Pastiche, which Christine's daughter-in-law raved about as well. A piece of the decadent chocolate tort and a marcapone filled cake were the ultimate desserts.
Don't know when we'll get back to Providence, but Casa Christine will be on our list, definitely!!
