I'm a vodka fan, enjoy my vodka after or with a meal or appetizers. None of the flavored stuff, only the traditional unflavored for me. Vodka is like any spirit in my opinion some are grossly overrated and some are hidden gems. It's my personal favorite of the spirits because it never gives me a hangover, and if you drink it properly it won't make you hammered. If you're drinking vodka to get drunk, you're doing it wrong. It should be consumed with food this is how Russians and Poles drink it. Personally I prefer it chilled in shots over cocktails any day. Also you can pick up the nuances better. I know some don't like it but I do. In my experience there are the more gritty, hotter vodkas, and the sweeter ones. Personally I go for the grittier ones I don't like the sweet ones they smell & just taste bad to me. But to each their own.
As for brands, the one I like best is Sobieski, many don't know of it but it's a Polish rye vodka that's incredibly good. It's smooth, yet still has a bite and character. And none of that sickly sweetness some vodkas have, which I hate. Sobieski is amazing. I like it in shots chilled with or after meals. It's only priced at around 12 dollars too, which is an amazing deal. I've tried it in cocktails and it holds up there very well too. But it's best neat.
I also like Stolichnaya, it's a good gritty vodka with a kick to it, but very different from Sobieski. It's not sweet at all to me, it has an industrial taste which isn't bad. But with Stoli I've found one has to be careful it can cause pretty bad hangovers if not careful. Not sure why. Stoli I think is also best neat if served ice cold/chilled. In cocktails it can really sneak up.
Grey Goose I find to be overpriced and very overrated. It stung way too much. Absolut I hate, and Smirnoff strangely I don't like the regular 80 proof at all but I do like the 100 proof blue bottle Smirnoff. Not sure why that is.
But definitely anyone who likes vodka and drinking it the traditional way should try Sobieski it's a great value and very good product.
