...in my book, has changed from the delicate and evanescently creamy taro pudding at Phoenix Inn's Food Boutique to Sweet Lady Jane's apple brown betty.
I haven't mentioned my affection for Sweet Lady Jane, because it's so goddamn well known and all, and I've had a longstanding affection for their German chocolate cake (unless many of the other high-endish dessert shops in town, they don't go for extra-heavy extra-thick extra-chocolatey near-fudgeness, but really go for the *cakey* part of the cake).
But their apple brown betty is quite a bit beyond anything I've had there - sort of a delicate creamy/cluffy bread pudding with clumps of spiced cooked apples.
It looks considerably less fancy/perfect/appealing than anything else there, so my eye was drawn away for a long time.
I have a serious apple-dessert fetish, that is normally only adequately satisfied when I lean on some Southern lady in my acquaintance, and they home-bake me a nice pie with a flakey crust, but this apple brown betty is fully sensational. All the local Southern ladies in my current acquantance have been dragged to SLJ and bowed in recognition of the godhead.
