What's good these days on the San Francisco Bay Area ice cream front? Through the pandemic I've noticed several new purveyors popping up, any that you recommend? Let's hear about start-ups as well as your tried and true favorites. And we can look more broadly to talk about places to stop when you're in the neighborhood and not only destination worthy places.
July is National Ice Cream Month, and the third Sunday of July (today, 7/18/21) is National Ice Cream Day, a legacy of President Reagan.
To lead off, The Original Swensen's Ice Cream shop in San Francisco, founded in 1946. Ice cream is still made on-site. I was driving by in March and a parking space appeared before my eyes. I took advantage of this to have ice cream to-go for lunch. It was still offering the holiday flavor, Peppermint, at that point so that was a must, and Toasted Almond on the bottom. My auntie lives two blocks up the hill and we kids always looked forward to getting a cone here. I still like Swensen's creamy style with direct flavors very much.
