Fava Pot is a handsome new place in Falls Church that sports a menu for casual eats as well as something more elegant. It has plenty of counter space and stools to snack at, but there are enough bare wood tables to eat in comfort.
A highlight here is the hummus. It is not the super smooth or creamy kind, but has a hearty consistency with lumps of chickpea. it is equal to the best I've had.
There are a couple of things on the menu that are a splurge, and I am not sure how they will sell in this environment. Squab with freekeh is a surprise. The bird is a lot larger than a quail but is similar in flavor. The freekeh is a cracked wheat dish, very delicious. The price tag is $28. Another option is a unique stewed veal kabob served with a short grain rice mixed with vermicelli. A lot of attention to detail and careful preparation goes into the side dishes. This costs $19. There is also a lamb shank over rice and bread soaked in a tomato, vinegar, and garlic sauce that goes for $20.
In between the cheap and splurge items are are grilled kabobs, felafel, and koshary.
And if you've ever wondered what is served for an Egyptian breakfast, Fava Pot has your answer. They open very early in the morning. I am definitely tempted to come back for their porridge, baked omelette, and a fava bean wrap.
A couple of the items not worth the time and money are their grape leaves (dry) and the liver with lime and pomegranate molasses (sour). Avoid those and you should be fine.
