After a few months of drooling anticipation, I managed to gather a small group of friends to hit The Fat Dragon BBQ. Being too early for most people to eat barbecue we were the first and only table in at 11:30. (Sorry, I don't have any photos today!)
First up was a Green Papaya Salad. My friends were fans of this but I thought the flavours needed a little more balance. I think I was hoping for a really good som tum but there was no sweetness or spice in the dressing - it was all acid. Maybe it was a good thing given the richness to come. I did really like the fried shallot.
Next came a round of bao, I tried the fried calamari and the kabocha squash with tasty mayo. Both were good but not outstanding.
Now for the meats. We tried the Jalan Alor chicken wings. These were tasty. Brightly saucy, spicy, crispy, salty goodness. The Prime Rib beef ribs were texturally amazing - perfectly smoked, tender with a bit of exterior crunch. Delicious meat but the sauce, again, could have used a little more punch and dimension.
As got an order of very good fried rice but the carb star was definitely the side of noodles. Similar in width and texture to a ramen noodle, these were stir-fried with meat medley drippings and topped with chives and ginger. Amazing.
Soft serve flavour that day was mint. It was pretty decent. We also shared a milk chocolate bar bar which had coconut and pecan (i think) in it. Very tasty.
Overall, a really nice addition to Gastown's inevitable encroachment into Strathcona. Many things I did not get to try so we will definitely be back.
