Old fashioned southern treat... Pickled spiced peaches

When I was growing up, when preparing for guests, my mother served pickled spiced peaches with the meal which were the highlight on her southern table. I always begged at least one from my mother, as she poured the peaches from the canning jars into a storage container, to chill in the refrigerator before the meal was served. Back in "those days" if pickling and canning wasn't part of your culinary repertoire, one could purchase commercially prepared spiced pickled peaches, at the grocery store. (rare if not impossible to find today).

These glistening peaches were bottled whole; pierced with cloves and suspended in a large jar full of crystal clear syrup. The grocer displayed these pricey peaches on the very top shelf next to the fancy colored cherries and imported plums, which were splurged on when company was coming. This time every year, when I pass the roadside hill country peach stands, I fondly recall my mother's table and long for those delicious pickled spiced peaches of my youth. If anyone has a tried and true canning recipe for pickled spiced whole peaches, I would really appreciate you sharing it with me. Unfortunately Hurricanes Ike and Harvey devastated my cookbook and recipe collection including my mother's handwritten menus and recipes.
