Do old-fashioned egg rolls still exist?

ptrichmondmike | Mar 16, 200810:45 AM

It seems like years now since I've been able to find a big, tasty egg roll like those I grew up on in the 1960s.

NOT spring rolls, nice as they can be. I mean the big, heavy, egg-battered cylinders with bean sprouts and pork that were common appetizers in Chinese-American restaurants way back when.

You can still find them commonly in Chicago (along with other dinosaurs such as Chicken Kiev), but here in California even menus that list "egg rolls" really mean spring rolls.

What happened? Killed by authenticity? Not healthy? Or am I just looking in the wrong places?

East Bay recs especially useful.
