Old-fashioned Donuts

While I know these donuts don't exist on the east coast, I'm hoping some west coasters can help me out. These are the donuts that have something similar to scalloped edges. It's hard enough to find people that know and appreciate this donut, let alone to find a recipe for it. I have been told that these are the equivalent of sour cream donuts. I have also never seen the cutters that shape these donuts. I'm looking for a recipe for these donuts. I'd also like to know if the majority of donut shops make these from a basic mix or from scratch, although I know most donut shops don't make anything from scratch anymore.

P.S. I should note that I hate the old fashioneds from Krispy Kreme. I only like the ones where the edges are clearly and obviously defined.
