I had lunch at Farmicia today with a friend, thanks to the suggestion of a fellow Chowhounder. The food was excellent - she had the smoked trout salad and I had the jumbo lump crab salad, and we shared the warm apple and sundried cherry galette with cream cheese ice cream for dessert. The ice cream tasted like plain (although good) vanilla, but everything else was excellent. They were out of their soup (at 12:45, with over two hours of lunch to go) and didn't have either the advertised fresh squeezed juices or Izze Grapefruit or Lemon, and all of that was annoying, but the food was good. The food wasn't the problem.
The service sucked.
We arrived at 12:30. We left at 2:20, and not because we lingered - because the waiter was pretty much nonexistent and indifferent. The first problem came when our salads arrived, and the trout salad had hard boiled egg all over it, which was not in the description and is a food my friend cannot eat. The waiter was unhappy about her very polite request to have a new salad made, and after leaving the new salad, was pretty much never heard from again. Our plates sat empty for over a half hour before he came back and deposited the check on the table without a word. When I asked for the dessert menu, he looked at me as if it had never occurred to him that anyone would ever want dessert.
He never asked how the food was. He never checked if we wanted a drink refill, and it was impossible to get one because he was just...gone.
I might go back to try dinner, if it weren't for the service.
Afterward we went to Flying Monkey Patisserie at Reading Terminal, and so far...fantastic. I bought five cupcakes, three peanut butter sandwich cookies, and two Santa Fe brownies (with cayenne and cinnamon). I ate a vanilla cupcake with coffee frosting and my friend had a brownie, and both were delicious. The cake was very moist and just dense enough with an excellent frosting. I'm sure the rest are going to be fantastic as well. I'm so happy this place is here.
