Farmer's markets, Farm stands- Western suburbs

Mandy | Apr 29, 2002 01:15 PM

I grew up in NJ going to farmer's markets where the produce really came directly from the farmers. We also had a plethora of farm stands where I regularly purchased wonderful, fresh produce. I miss those.

Perhaps it's because I live on the Main Line, where too few people care about the freshness of their produce or the farmers who grew it. Since moving here, I've learned that the term farmer's market has too little to do with farmers and too much to do with market. I'm disappointed with the quality of the produce, that with few exceptions, comes from a distributor, not the farmer. Although I've looked, I have not found any farm stands either. I was sure I'd find something in Newtown, where I've spent hours driving around. Although I found farms, I didn't locate any farm stands.

I've considered buying into one of the co-ops, but we simply don't eat enough to make it worthwhile. Plus, half the fun is admiring what is in season and choosing whatever strikes me that day.

Please help me to find the markets or farm stands in the area where I can buy produce that comes directly from the farm, not the distributor.

I hope you can send me in the right direction. Tis the season!
