The Best Farm Stand

Last summer we discovered First Farm, just outside the
town of Rangeley Lakes in central Maine. From the
moment we drove up, we were just astounded. The flower
garden was brilliant and the old wooden house from
which they sell their flowers and produce was
practically buzzing, everything seemed so vibrant. We
bought and feasted on several things. What stands out
in our minds were the beet greens, which we sauteed
with one of the several types of garlic they raised -
they were just delicious, but the best parts were the
baby beets that were still attached, which we cut off
and roasted with butter. This year we got whole beets
which we treated the same way - WOW - they were so
sweet - we couldn't get enough. There were lots of
other wonderful things - the garlic, as I said, many
kinds of lettuces and mesclun, carrots,
various types of potatoes - the usual, but it wasn't
usual, really, everything was exemplary. And bouquets
of flowers, all arranged (you could even buy the vase
if you didn't want to disturb the arrangement). I am a
Greenmarket frequenter, so it's not that I'm just
reacting to fresh-off-the farm produce - this is truly
worth a visit if you're ever in the area.
