Fang - more performance than taste

After seeing an exhibit at the SFMOMA, our out-of-town guests had a hankering for Chinese food. Since the car was parked across the street from Fang on Howard St, which seemed like a lively spot, they were eager to try it. I had a hunch it was a mistake, but thought I'd accommodate their inclinations.

Yes, we were greeted nicely by the owner. And the offer to let him design our menu based on our eating preferences (more fish, less meat) sounded like a fun idea. Indeed, we all enjoyed the appetizer immensely -- shrimp salad nicely spiced with lottsa garlic. We were delighted with the food, and enjoyed the spectacle of the experience.

But after that, it was downhill all the way.

The Food:
Some sort of sauteed white fish -- tasteless, frozen -- on par with Mrs. Paul's fish sticks.
A very bland chicken dish -- and no one seemed to mind that there was a microscopic portion of chicken, since no one enjoyed eating it.

The Service;
Soup arrived with pork-filled wonton though there was a discussion with the owner at the outset about why one of our party didn't eat pork. (no, nothing to do with religion.)
Twice, I asked for hot sauce which never arrived.
And for the grand finale, the check was slapped in my hand without ever being asked if we wanted anything else...like dessert perhaps. Or how about more hot water for the tea?
