This is one of those impossibly broad but desperately heartfelt queries.
My family of four is traveling to Austin and San Antonio on a forthcoming public school break. The reason is simple: We've never been to this part of Texas. Or, with one long ago, Big Bend exception, Texas. Period. And the food, based on what I've read in some Saveur magazine stories and hearsay, sounds terrific.
What are the restaurants we should not miss in San Antonio and Austin and the immediate environs?
a) We have two children, 4 and 8, who are generally well behaved but. . . really fancy dining is probably not advisable.
b) We come from the San Francisco Bay Area and have lots of good Asian ethnic food here. So we're not looking for that. What we really want is Tex-Mex or whatever we can not get here.
Thanks so much!
