We're from Orange County (CA, not NY) and spending the weekend in Tarrytown and need places to eat. There are a lot of old posts and I'm not sure which ones are still valid. I saw the Portuguese place (Caravela?) on Broadway, which intrigues me because we can't get Portuguese food at ALL in Los Angeles -- not a single Portuguese restaurant.
Despite having grown up not an hour from here, I have been to Westchester exactly once, which was to do the official school-trip Sleepy Hollow and then West Point tour as a ten-year-old. It certainly LOOKS nice enough -- but last night all we could find in our jet-lagged, why-is-there-such-traffic-on-the-Van-Wyck-at-10PM confusion was (ugh) T.G.I. Friday's.
We're looking for casual places, not terribly expensive (let's say no more than $20 entrees), and places to which we can take a well-behaved (really, I'm not making it up) 1-year-old, and into which we can get without having to bribe the concierge to get us a reservation. Also -- I'm so embarrassed to have to ask this question, but I've been away for 10 years -- please tell us what the dress is like (jeans, khakis, tie/jacket). In LA you can eat in any restaurant in jeans and blend in, which makes for strange tablescapes to my East Coast-bred eyes.
We're right near Irvington, which looks promising, but potentially expensive. I don't want to go too far, or to cross over to Rockland (part of the family nearly had a nervous breakdown the last time we crossed the Tappan Zee on the way THROUGH Westchester).
Please help us avoid the fate of T.G.I. Friday's -- and we'll let you know where we ate and how it was.
